1999 Excellence Awards

April 1999
Spectrum Label further establishes its dominance as both a label printer and a narrow-web flexible packaging converter by winning an unprecedented third Best of Show.

By David Luttenberger

With its entry "Gia Vi Pho Ga," a flexo-printed flexible bag, Spectrum Label Corp., San Carlos, CA, became the first package printer to win three Best of Show titles in packagePRINTING's Excellence Awards competition. Spectrum Label previously won Best of Show honors in 1998 and 1994.

Spectrum's entry, which also took First Place honors in the Flexible Packaging, Film/Foil, Flexo (process) category, was selected by judges from among more than 450 entries representing the best and most innovatively printed labels, flexible packaging, folding cartons, corrugated and specialty converted packaging. The Excellence Awards is the largest annual competition of its kind to recognize all forms of printed packaging.

After winning its category, "Gia Vi Pho Ga" went head to head with winners from 12 other categories to vie for Best of Show. There, it came down to two entries, "Gia Vi Pho Ga" and "Comanche Gold," an offset-printed folding carton entered by Bert-Co Graphics, of Los Angeles, CA. "Comanche Gold" was cited for its outstanding use of spot varnishes, foil stamping, embossing and eye-popping graphics. The judges lauded Bert-Co for its initiative in fulfilling and exceeding customer expectations for a carton produced for the CD-rom home-electronics market, an emerging market for carton printers.

Besides Spectrum Label, several other package printers earned multiple awards, including: DowIndustries, Wilmington, MA; Label Technology, Merced, CA; Graphic Packaging, Malvern, PA; M&W Packaging, Jackson, MO; Bancroft Bag, W. Monroe, LA; Union Camp Flexible Packaging Div., Spartanburg, SC; and, Inland Container, Indianapolis, IN. Spear, Mason, OH, led all winners with eight awards.

Judges for the 1999 Excellence Awards were: Roy Webb, Mark Andy; Max Stolz, Heidelberg USA; John Samony, Akzo Nobel; Dru Kefalos, Mobil Chemical Co., Films Div.; Rich Emmerling, Polyfibron Technologies; and, Jim Flynn, Gallus.
