European Smart Label Conference

November 2006
This year’s Smart Label Summit Europe, taking place November 15-16 at the Hotel Okura in Amsterdam, will focus on the combined advances in Smart and RFID label technology. The summit, hosted by the organizers of Labelexpo Europe, is designed to help label converters learn about the size of the market and growth forecasts, as well as provide practical advice on how to adopt this technology. Leading experts from some of the world’s top consumer brands will be taking center stage in Amsterdam later this month to share their expertise with the international delegation.

The retail, healthcare, IT, transport, and FMCG sectors are all represented on the conference program. Directors and senior managers from Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Hewlett-Packard, Scandinavian Airlines, and Unilever will be speaking to delegates over the two days. New on the conference program is a presentation from David Morgan, surgeon and consultant in the National Health Service (NHS), who will be detailing how the UK government-run health service is improving the safety of drugs through the use of smart labels. He will present examples of how the technology is applied to track blood tests, x-rays and other patient tests. Morgan will also demonstrate how the use of intelligent labels and packaging enable safe and secure tracking of medicines in the supply chain.

Timestrip Plc, the developer and manufacturer of smart label technology that accurately measures elapsed time will be at the Amsterdam summit. The company’s smart labels enable users of perishable food and other products to monitor for how long an item has been open or in use. Reuben Isbitsky, Timestrip’s Joint CEO will present case studies illustrating how Timestrip has been integrated into numerous consumer products.

The summit will include a masterclass led by international label industry expert Mike Fairley. The half-day masterclass will provide label converters and end-users with a practical understanding of smart/RFID technology. Delegates will learn how smart labels are constructed, including in-line and off-line manufacture, the printing of antennae with conductive inks, methods of attaching straps and inlays, how and where to test for faulty inlays and controlling the finished product. A tabletop exhibition will run alongside the conference with leading global and European suppliers showing their latest products and innovations. Exhibitors include Avery Dennison, HP, Timestrip, bielomatik, Domino Printing Sciences, Jetrion, Muehlbauer, and Picosoft.

Roger Pellow, Smart Label Summit managing director, said, “We look forward to welcoming delegates to Amsterdam next month. The summit will provide opportunities for converters to learn how these fast-developing technologies can help their label businesses now and in the future. The potential of these technologies is vast. With forecasts predicting dramatic growth over the next few years, converters need to be kept updated about how they can adapt and expand their businesses according to the changing market needs. With brand owners looking for more sophisticated and secure labeling on their products, the summit provides the ideal platform for converters to hear these requirements directly from some of the biggest global brand leaders.”
