Industry veteran Howard B. Vreeland passes away at 87

June 2008
BRYAN, Ohio—U.S. Veteran and printing industry representative Howard B. Vreeland, Sr., 87, of Bryan, died Friday, June 13, 2008.

Born on October 4, 1920, in Caldwell, New Jersey, Vreeland was the son of John Henry and Lulu Belle (Ward) Vreeland. He graduated from Kingspoint Merchant Marine Academy in Long Island, New York where he received a degree in Hydraulic Engineering. A Navy veteran of WWII, he married Alice T. Kennedy on December 14, 1945 three hours after his college graduation, in Long Island, New York. She preceded him in death on July 6, 2002. Howard was the Owner and Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors for Anderson-Vreeland Company, Bryan. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Bryan, and Orchard Hills Country Club. He was a past member of the Bryan Board of Public Affairs. He also served as an umpire for the Bryan Baseball Association.

Professionally, Vreeland was actively involved in the Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) since its inception in 1959, as well as other graphic arts associations. He served as Vice Chairman of the Solicitation Committee of the FTA, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, was a workshop head for two years and received FTA’s President’s Award in 2002. He was a former Director of the Graphic Preparatory Association (GPA), an association that awarded him its President’s Award in 1972. Vreeland also received the Marking Devices Association’s President’s Award and was a member of TAPPI.

Vreeland is survived by three children, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
