Nu Tech Coatings Recieves Patent for Polymer Application to Plate Cylinders

September 2007

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.—A U.S. patent has been awarded to Nu Tech Coatings for a unique polymer application used on existing or newly manufactured print cylinders.

A 0.375 polymer coating is applied directly to a plate cylinder, which allows the flexographic plate to be mounted with 0.005 tape. The coating acts as a shock absorber and eliminates plate-to-substrate impression as a variable in the printing process. As a result of this ability to over impress the plate without the usual negative consequences, makeready times are dramatically reduced, press speeds are increased, and substrate waste and press downtime are substantially improved. As an added benefit, gear marking and banding are virtually eliminated, further improving quality and run yields.

“With more than 1,000 coated cylinders in use daily by 150 printers, this is no longer a novelty,” said George Brunst, managing partner of Nu Tech Coatings. “We have seen a recent increase in orders from pharmaceutical printers, due to the demand for zero defect printing, and our PEC product helps them achieve that. Our vision is to help narrow-web printers to be the quality leaders in the markets they serve, while simultaneously helping reduce their cost.”

Hi Jeff:

The product was designed to address the Narrow Web segment, web widths up to 25".

We have coated quite a few cylinders in the mid web range, and up to 44".

Most of our customers comment that the coating pays for itself the first time they run the cylinders in reduced make-ready times, increased press speeds, and decreased down time due to plate cleaning and registration issues.

We do have some limitation with our equipment on size, but I will be glad to answer any questions you may have, and explore the possibility of supplying you with one of our coated cylinders.

Best regards,

Jim Wyman
