Well, it’s a new year. Many of us are starting out with clean slates—new budgets, new plans, and high hopes for a better year. And what a year this could be. There are lots of significant issues that could really be a drag on the economy—the subprime credit fiasco, housing slowdown, inflationary pressures, and fears of an impending recession. Of course, it’s also a presidential election year, a wide-open affair that promises to be as interesting as any in recent memory, and possibly historic in many ways.

Getting closer to home, packagePRINTING is starting off the year with a number of changes to bring to your attention. First of all, you’ll notice that we have removed the reader service form on the last page and replaced it with a new column called “The Last Run.” Although the form is gone, you still have the ability to request information online. We know there are many ways of getting the specific information you are interested in from companies that advertise in packagePRINTING, not the least of which is the Internet. No matter how you stay informed, we hope that you find the information supplied by our advertisers as a valuable resource for improving your businesses.

“The Last Run” will appear on the last page of each issue of packagePRINTING. The focus of the column will vary based on topics that are important to the industry. It will be written either by our editorial staff or a guest columnist that has an interesting perspective on the topic at hand. In this issue, Dr. Peter Harrop, CEO of IDTechEx, provides some insights on developments that could make RFID as ubiquitous as bar codes at some point in the future.

Also this year, packagePRINTING will devote monthly features to business management issues/opportunities that are important to the package-printing industry. These features will augment coverage that already includes prepress, on-press, off-press, and technology issues. Business topics covered throughout this year will include mergers and acquisitions, globalization, capital financing strategies, and brand protection.
