SunChips' Compostable Chip Bag

PLANO, Texas—PepsiCo's Frito-Lay division has introduced what it claims is the world's first 100 percent compostable chip bag for its SunChips brand. The new bags are made with plant-based polylactic acid, a renewable material that also allows the bags to fully compost in about 14 weeks when placed in a hot, active compost bin.

"With the launch of the world's first 100 percent compostable chip bag, SunChips is introducing a first-of-its-kind innovation that builds on our commitment to foster a healthier planet," said Gannon Jones, VP of marketing, Frito-Lay North America.

Frito-Lay spent several years testing different solutions to address the functions that make up snack food packaging. Once developed, SunChips worked with Wood's End, an independent laboratory, to evaluate the performance and certify the compostability of the packaging. Additionally, the bag received third-party certification from the Biodegradable Products Institute, which incorporates a rigorous certification process for compostable claims.

P&G Launches Environmental Sustainability Scorecard

CINCINNATI—The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) recently launched its Supplier Environmental Sustainability Scorecard and rating process to measure and improve the environmental performance of its key suppliers. The new scorecard will assess P&G suppliers' environmental footprint and encourage continued improvement by measuring energy use, water use, waste disposal, and greenhouse gas emissions on a year-to-year basis.

"The launch of the Supplier Environmental Sustainability Scorecard represents the next step in P&G's commitment to environmental sustainability and reflects the company's holistic, end-to-end supply chain strategy," said P&G chairman of the board, president, and CEO Bob McDonald. "We will grow P&G's business by touching and improving more consumers' lives in more parts of the world—more completely. To accomplish this, we must continually innovate and grow responsibly and sustainably. Keeping Sustainability at the core of our business fuels innovation and strengthens our results." pP
