TAPPI elects three to join Board of Directors in 2007

TAPPI members have elected three individuals to the TAPPI Board of Directors for the 2007-2009 term:
Carlos Augusto Lira Aguiar, President & CEO, Aracruz Celulose S.A.—Brazil
Jukka Tiitinen, President, Metso Paper North America
Mark T. Watkins, Senior Vice President, MeadWestvaco Corporation
These new TAPPI directors will begin their terms of office following the TAPPI Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony, March 15, 2007 in Jacksonville, Florida. In addition, terms of service are ending for the Board’s top two officer positions. The incoming Chairman is Mark R. McCollister, Paperchine Inc.; Jeffrey J. Siegel, president of Mica Corporation, will assume McCollister’s former role as vice chairman.
Born in the state of Ceará, Brazil, Carlos Aguiar has enjoyed a 37-year career in the pulp and paper industry. In 1998, Aguiar was appointed president and CEO of Aracruz Celulose S.A., with the mission of making the company more competitive and, through growth, to prepare it to confront the challenges of world globalization. A TAPPI member since 1987, Aguiar was named a TAPPI Fellow in 2003. He serves as President of the SINDIPAPEL Pulp and Paper Trade Union in Espírito Santo. Aguiar was named 2002 CEO of the Year - Latin America by ING Barings and Emerging Markets, Prague.
Jukka Tiitinen joined Metso Paper (formerly Valmet Corporation) in 1987 while studying at the University of Technology in Helsinki, Finland. He’s held posts for the company in Australia, Finland, and the U.S., and played an active role in Metso’s 2000 acquisition of Beloit Corp. He is an active Board member of Metso Paper USA Inc. (2003); Metso Paper Canada Ltd. (2003); the Finnish American Chamber Of Commerce, Southeast Chapter (2004); and the Center for Paper Business and Industry Studies (CPBIS) at Georgia Tech (2005).
Mark Watkins is senior vice president of MeadWestvaco Corporation with responsibility for corporate engineering, health and environmental, and the specialty paper and forestry divisions. Previously, he served as vice president of technology for the Mead Corporation. He began his industry career in 1977 at Union Camp’s Franklin, Virginia, mill as a process engineer. Watkins has served as Chairman for the AF&PA Agenda 2020 CTO Committee; as Liaison Delegate, World Business Council for Sustainable Development; and as co-chair, WBCSD Sustainable Forest Products Industry Working Group.
Assuming the role of TAPPI BOD Chairman is Mark R. McCollister, regional sales manager for Paperchine Inc. in Rockton, Ill. A TAPPI member since 1977, McCollister has been very active with the Empire State Section, and was named a TAPPI Fellow in 2003. He has also served as a member of TAPPI’s 2010 Group, charged with assessing the future of the Association.
