Environmental Health & Safety Conference Increases Attendance in 2008

PITTSBURGH, Pa.—Industry interest in and programming on sustainability helped increase attendance at the 2008 National Environmental Health & Safety Conference by 53 percent. About 225 people attended the March event at the Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre Hotel, a number the 13-year-old conference hasn’t experienced since 2002. The keynote presentation by Mark DiVito, “The State of Sustainability in Graphic Communications,” was based on a survey by Reed Business Information. This survey identified how different printing stakeholders are addressing green issues. The results included: • Companies that felt the emphasis on sustainability in printing had increased in the past year: 75 percent. • Companies with a

The RadTech Food Contact Notification Alliance is pleased to announce that Food Contact Notification (FCN) 772 received FDA approval on March 7, 2008, covering a range of workhorse acrylates and an optional photoinitiator. Specifically, FCN 772 clears for direct food contact any mixture of one or more of tripropylene glycol diacrylate (TPGDA), trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA), trimethylolpropane ethoxylate triacrylate (TMPEOTA), and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether diacrylate and optionally, Esacure One photoinitiator, cured by either ultraviolet (UV) or electron beam (EB) irradiation. Moreover, the applied formulations may include any combination with other reactants, polymers, additives, pigments, etc. already permitted for the intended use under 21 CFR.

Flexo has long been crowned the fastest growing graphic arts application for UV technology, and experts say usage continues to climb across all press widths. On narrow-web presses in particular, UV curing systems have moved decisively into standard component territory. “Now it would be very rare for a [narrow-web] press not to have at least one UV [unit] … and most presses are all UV,” affirms John Mitchell, sales/product manager, UVTechnology.
