Start Your Journey with Your Customer
August 2008 From packagePRINTING
Printers like to hear their presses running, because hopefully money is being made and customer demands are being met. But shorter runs can tie up a press with more frequent setups. Integrating short print runs into an overall business plan isn’t as easy as it might sound. To accommodate customer demand for these types of runs, a package printer must do its homework long before actually accepting the orders. Impact of shorter runs Print jobs that are shorter than the norm impact printers’ businesses and business operations, but not necessarily negatively as long as they are proactive. “Our short-run sales increased by 50 percent

Lights, Camera, Action!
February 2008 From packagePRINTING
Boy, there’s a lot to inspection! In-line versus off-line, rewind versus press-mounted, the human eye versus video—these are only a few, but critical, considerations. There are various inspection systems on the market, some for use on the press, and some for use on the rewinder as the web is rewound. Each inspection system is designed to take certain actions when it detects a defect in the printed product. These defects can range from registration to incorrect characters. In addition, with brand protection emerging as a growing market niche, the ability to inspect microprinting and other security markings not visible to the naked eye is

Go, Speed Racer
September 2007 From packagePRINTING
Turnaround times are critical in today’s package-printing world. Couple quick turnaround with the demand for shorter runs, and your press operators will be switching tools almost constantly. Diecutting is an integral part of the entire printing process and can impact the speed at which you can fulfill print orders. Just as diecutting impacts the speed of your print job, external forces, such as consolidation, globalization, new substrates and shorter runs, affect the diecutting market. “The label printing industry as a whole has been changing rapidly in recent years,” says Frank Hasselberg, executive vice president, Kocher + Beck USA. “These changes also have a huge

Respecting the Needs of the Trade
May 2007 From packagePRINTING
Short-run printing is a reality today for any package printer, and a converter’s ability to adapt to this reality will go a long way toward customer retention. Being able to offer customers the option of shorter runs is the equivalent of offering them a new product—such as a new substrate, a specialty ink, or the ability to soft proof. However, integrating the shorter jobs into conventional press runs can be a challenging proposition. On the one hand, no one wants to turn down business, but on the other hand, fitting the shorter job in between two longer runs means more planning and makeready. Profecta

Inline Versus Offline Inspection
March 2007 From packagePRINTING
Consumers are probably as smart as you think they are, and when it comes down to one vendor’s package versus another’s, they notice everything. They’ll notice print and graphics on the package that are out of registration, and they’ll definitely notice when the bar code isn’t printed correctly as they wait at the checkout for an item to scan properly. You’ll see it in your bottom line if the vendors to whom you print packaging aren’t completely happy with the end result, especially if what you printed doesn’t match what they approved at the tail end of press qualification. Today’s web inspection systems have

Never Boring
February 2007 From packagePRINTING
Shorter runs—they are the reality for many package printers today. This reality can impact your slitters/rewinders by way of greater wear and tear, more frequent tool changes, and so on, but these are not the only packaging trends that affect the slitters/rewinders market. The myriad substrates available to converters alone impacts slitter/rewinder performance and construction. Thank the emergence of flexible packaging for the increased substrate requirements. All these factors will impact your business in terms of what equipment you buy—a typical rewinder versus a turret rewinder, for example—what you will do to increase the lifespan of such equipment, as well as what other types
